Lumen Learning: Open for Student Success

By replacing expensive commercial textbooks with free, high quality open content, open educational resources (OER) represent a largely untapped opportunity to make education more affordable, while at the same time improving student success.

Lumen Learning was founded to 1) expand a collective vision of what is now possible with OER, and 2) help K-12 and higher education institutions, faculty, and learners take full advantage of its benefits to cut costs and strengthen student learning.

Lumen Learning’s Roots in OER

Co-founded by open education visionary Dr. David Wiley and education technology strategist Kim Thanos, Lumen is dedicated to facilitating broad, successful adoption of OER.

After years of pioneering work in education, David and Kim collaborated on the Next Generation Learning Challenges grant-funded Kaleidoscope Open Course Initiative in 2012 to replace textbooks with OER in community college classrooms. The project was wildly successful. It cut the cost of required textbooks to zero. Student success rates in some courses increased by over 10% compared to the same courses offered by the same instructors in prior years. (Read more here.)

Adding this concrete proof to the body of evidence supporting OER, David and Kim decided to join forces as Lumen Learning to help more educational institutions and students realize gains like these.
