Major Course Upgrades: Fall 2016 Detail

The table below outlines key improvements in upgraded Lumen courses for fall 2016.

Course Upgrade Key Improvements Availability
Candela College Success All-new College Success course developed by Lumen Learning. Student learning outcomes (SLOs) align closely with previous version. Enhanced with images, videos, and more engaging text. Includes student self-checks and activities on every page. Now available
Candela Principles of Marketing Candela Principles of Marketing course uses heavily updated and improved course content originally developed for Waymaker Principles of Marketing. While grounded in traditional marketing fundamentals, this course is oriented towards “modern” marketing practice that incorporates technology in the digital age. Pervasive updates include engaging material, current case studies, images, simulations, graphics, self-checks, quiz banks, sample assessments and discussion forums.   Now available
Candela Problem Sets for Chemistry (Early release) Provides online homework system and quiz bank covering Chemistry I topics. Assessments are randomized and algorithmically-generated, so each quiz/assignment is unique. Delivered in MyOpenMath platform, integrated with the LMS.
These problem sets align well with the Candela Chemistry course (built around the OpenStax book). They can also be adapted for use with other chemistry courses and texts.
Now available
Candela Anthology for English Composition (Reader) Compiling an openly-licensed anthology for writing courses is difficult because most essays and literature are copyrighted. In partnership with Ivy Tech, Lumen compiled this reader comprised of Creative Commons-licensed sources. The anthology includes a template and instructions for finding other CC sources if faculty prefer to seek other material for the reader. Now available
Waymaker Microeconomics and Waymaker Macroeconomics These courses share the first five modules, which cover foundational economic principles. Fall 2016 updates focus on improvements to the first four modules. In the coming months they will be extended to all content in both courses. Updates include:

  • Online problem sets and graphing tool (early release version). Scaffolded approach walks students through problems conceptually and mathematically. Practice includes drawing, manipulating, interpreting graphs. Immediate feedback reinforces correct responses and targets common student errors. OER alternative to popular online practice systems.
  • Sample discussion forums and assignments. Comprehensive set of openly-licensed learning activities provide opportunities for feedback and interaction with peers and instructors. Encourage students to develop and demonstrate mastery.
  • Improved, more engaging content. New introductory module introduces students to basic economic concepts, economic thinking and math skills to build a strong foundation for success in economics courses. Concepts are presented to make them more accessible to students, with more engaging language, relevant examples and improved structure to guide students through learning outcomes step-by-step. New isometric graphics for simulations link understandable, real-life scenarios to the dynamics of supply and demand. See simulation example.
  • Enhanced quiz bank. Larger quiz banks, including new questions aligned to updated content.
Now available
Waymaker Introduction to Business Provides a newly designed set of sample discussion forums and assignments for use throughout the course. Now available
Waymaker Principles of Marketing Originally released in spring 2016, this course is a substantial contribution to the body of open educational resources for teaching Marketing. It provides highly engaging and up-to-date content including text, simulations, graphics, case studies, examples, videos, images, etc.

Updates based on faculty feedback include the addition of new sample discussion forums and content improvements covering the following topics: the Economic Man theory and the stimulus-response model; differentiation between consumer and business products; the role of wholesalers; various editorial corrections.
