Open Source Leader Chris Coppola to Join Lumen Learning as Chief Product Officer

PORTLAND, Ore. (June 28, 2017) – Lumen Learning announced the appointment of Chris Coppola as chief product officer, making a strategic addition to the open education company’s leadership team. In this role, he will lead Lumen’s product organization in the development and delivery of digital course materials designed to improve student success by combining research-based learning design with open educational resources.

“It has been exciting to see the progress of this young company working to fix a broken college textbook model by solving tenacious problems with access, affordability, and effectiveness,” Coppola said. “As students, faculty, and other stakeholders feel the very real benefits of open education, I am eager to contribute my experience to the work of making this transformation a sustainable, enduring change in higher education.”

Coppola comes to Lumen Learning from Kuali, Inc., an organization he co-founded and helped to lead as chief operating officer since its inception in 2014. He also co-founded and led rSmart, a technology services provider that broke new ground offering hosting, services, and support for open-source software to manage academic, administrative and financial operations for colleges and universities.

“Throughout his career, Chris has demonstrated the ability to bring people and organizations together, creating communities that nurture great ideas,” said Kim Thanos, co-founder and CEO of Lumen Learning. “With Lumen’s success dependent on our ability to cultivate a healthy ecosystem around open education, Chris is the ideal person to shepherd our product team through the rapid growth we’re seeing year over year.”

Coppola will officially join Portland-based Lumen Learning in mid-July.
