Lumen’s new Lifespan Development course will be delivered in Lumen One, a new platform that brings together the best of Lumen’s teaching & learning solutions including a full suite of professional development resources to support evidence-based teaching.
The course engages students in active learning as they study how people change and grow over time. Students will gain foundational information about developmental perspectives while learning about research methods related to lifespan development.
Students will gain strategies to
- analyze growth through each of the major stages of development: prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood (including emerging adulthood), middle adulthood, late adulthood, death and dying.
- explore key lifespan topics such as major developmental theories such as psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, contextual, and evolutionary perspectives of development.
- connect their prior learning of psychology with multiple disciplines, including biology, sociology, anthropology, education, nutrition, economics, and healthcare as they examine the physical, cognitive, and social changes that occur across the lifespan.
- engage in activities that promote metacognition about how people change over time, including how they think, feel, and act.
- participate in collaborative active learning activities, where students will describe their observations about lifespan development, and then apply theoretical frameworks to better understand why these changes occur.
The course utilizes interactive content and practice with immediate feedback to maximize student understanding and retention. Every learning outcome includes practice questions that will help engage students to test their understanding. The instructor resources package is robust and includes easy-to-use, engaging slide decks, and in-class activities, with suggested modifications based on the modality of the course.
