A collaborative, team-wide initiative prepares engineers to grow, adapt, and lead — while modeling the principled, supported AI-adoption Higher Education needs.

Lumen Learning, a Higher Education courseware company, has taken a deliberate step toward preparing its engineering organization for the future of software development—one where the ability to work effectively with AI is essential to individual growth, long-term success, and meaningful impact.

In partnership with the AI Sprints Team, Lumen delivered a hands-on development experience designed to help engineers build lasting capability in working with AI. True to Lumen’s collaborative culture, the program was rolled out across the entire engineering and Quality Assurance organizations — creating a shared learning journey rather than a piecemeal or individually self-directed experience.

Over the course of the AI Sprints Coaching program, participants moved beyond experimentation to practical fluency — gaining the confidence to work with AI as a partner in exploring ideas, solving problems, and building solutions that serve Lumen’s mission.

“What stood out in Lumen’s demonstrations was how quickly the team moved from experimenting with AI to applying it together in ways that improved delivery speed, shared learning, and confidence in the work they ship,” said Prashant Nayak, AI Sprints. “Lumen embraced the core premise of AI Sprints: that AI adoption is not just an individual productivity gain, but a team capability transformation.”

Engineers shared experiments, discussed challenges openly, and built new practices together in a supportive environment. This approach reinforced a core belief: that meaningful capability is developed not in isolation, but through collaboration, reflection, and shared experience.

“The promise of AI in education is real, but so is our responsibility to the students and faculty who trust us with their data and their learning,” shared Jeanette Koskinas, Chief Product Officer at Lumen. “This initiative makes sure our engineers have the understanding, the judgment, and the shared principles to innovate in a way that genuinely serves the people who depend on us.”

The AI Sprints engagement reflects a deliberate response to a broader challenge facing both the technology sector and higher education. As AI adoption accelerates, many organizations have embraced the technology rapidly — often without the oversight, principled frameworks, or structured support needed to use it well. Lumen’s approach reflects a different belief: that the future is built by empowered teams learning and delivering together.
