At Lumen Learning, we’re constantly thinking about how to best help instructors and students succeed. That can be by creating and providing new effective and affordable courses, innovative features, or sharing evidence-based teaching practices that support instructors and students alike. That’s why we’re excited to now offer our Waymaker courseware for three Psychology courses.

The three courses are:

  1. Introduction to Psychology: This comprehensive, ready-to-adopt course provides thorough coverage of all topics covered in a typical introductory course, including biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social and personality psychology, and mental and physical health.
  2. Lifespan Development: This course examines the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional changes that occur throughout a lifetime. It covers the essentials in understanding human development, psychological research, and theories of growth and development.
  3. Abnormal Psychology: The latest course in the sequence, Abnormal Psychology, provides thorough coverage of all topics from The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), including a discussion of all major mental disorders, etiology, epidemiology, and treatments.

Why Offering Three Courses in Psychology Matters

Offering Waymaker, easy-to-use courseware that supports student learning and engagement, for these three courses is useful for instructors who want to provide high-quality, affordable digital courseware for their Psychology students. Many faculty are currently using textbook packages from a publisher, some of which cost well over $100. These Waymaker courses are comparable and available for just $25 to students. It’s also convenient for faculty who may already use one of our Waymaker courses and are familiar with how to implement and use the courseware. The three courses are core Psychology courses with high enrollments and faculty now have the option to provide students with affordable courseware that includes practice sets, applied examples, and quizzes to measure learning outcomes. Additionally, all three courses include extensive faculty guides.

“We feel it’s so important to offer these three courses,” said Wendy King, Course Product Manager for Lumen Learning. “The Intro course has the ‘psych in real life’ content that’s foundational and relevant. Lifespan Development has videos and questions to reinforce and reflect on the key concepts. And Abnormal Psych has case studies, video examples, and interactives on nearly every page.”

Abnormal Psychology, our newest offering, is particularly unique: it is the first comprehensive OER Abnormal Psychology course of its kind. It includes videos (150+), interactives (80+), practice questions (400+), and all of the features that Lumen customers know and love — assignments, discussions, PowerPoints slides, and question banks all integrated seamlessly into the Learning Management System (Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or D2L/Brightspace).

Additionally, Introduction to Psychology and Lifespan Development both have new interactives designed to give additional practice and a higher-level review of concepts that can be difficult for students.

“I’m excited about these three courses,” said Jessica Traylor, a Psychology instructor at Gordon State College. “As a faculty member, Waymaker courseware frees me up to focus on the more difficult theories. Students enjoy learning with Waymaker, and once they experience this courseware, they often want more courses available on the platform. One of my students recently shared that she loves Waymaker courseware because it breaks down concepts in ways that are easy to understand. That’s why having additional Psychology courses available from Lumen is so terrific.”
